How to keep score in Volleyball
Volleyball rally scoring, the deciding fifth set, and technical timeouts — how the scoreboard actually moves.
Rally scoring to 25
Sets are played to 25 points, win by 2. A point is scored on every rally (rally scoring). A match is best of 5 sets.
The deciding fifth set
If the match reaches 2-2, the fifth set is played to 15 (still win by 2). Teams switch ends when the leading team reaches 8 in the deciding set.
Technical timeouts
In the first four sets (FIVB rules), automatic technical timeouts occur when the leading team reaches 8 and 16 points. Each team also gets two regular timeouts per set.
